Safe Sleep

Does Your Child's Crib Look Like This?

Safe Sleep Practices

What is infant safe sleep?

Sudden unexpected infant death syndrome (SUIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants between 1 month and 1 year of age. This is what you can do to help your baby sleep safely and reduce your baby’s risk.

The ABCs of Safe Sleep

ALONE

I need to be in my crib, ALONE, with no other people, pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals. My crib should only have a fitted mattress sheet and I may be swaddled in a sleep sack. No bulb syringes, thermometers, or other extra supplies or linens should be stored in my crib.

BACK

When I am in my crib I should always be placed on my BACK. I should not lay on my stomach or side unless my doctor orders otherwise. My crib should be flat unless otherwise ordered.

CRIB

When I go home I am only to sleep in my CRIB. Please do not let me sleep in an adult bed, on the sofa, or on any other soft surface. I need to sleep on a firm mattress for my safety.

Other Safety Tips

Never leave your baby near the edge of a sofa, bed, or changing table; there is a possibility that he or she may roll over or wiggle over an edge at any age. Begin now taking steps to remove or guard your baby against things that could be harmful. Use childproof safety locks on cupboards containing medicine, cleaning supplies, or chemicals. Use electrical outlet covers on all outlets not being used.

Never assume that your baby is safe in the room alone with an older child.
