Union Hospital has partnered with fellow Better Health Wabash Valley member and neighbor Hamilton Center to bring a free community garden to the Union Hospital campus for our community and employees of both organizations. This is truly a community project as plot spaces are made available to households in the Wabash Valley. The Union Hospital Community Garden is a completely organic garden initiative, no pesticides or herbicides will be permitted.
We have targeted the neighborhood both north and south of Union Hospital. The 47804 zip code north of Union Hospital has a median household income of $31,065, well below the state average of $46,410. 33.3% of children age of 18 or younger live below the federal poverty level in this zip code and 7.9% of households do not have a vehicle for transportation. In the 47807 zip code south of Union Hospital, the median household income is $19,749. 71.3% of children live below the federal poverty level and 18.1% of households do not have a vehicle for transportation in this zip code.
The Union Hospital Community Garden is located west of N. 6th St. and 7th Ave. intersection at 1430 N. 6th St. which is a vacant lot that we have dedicated to the community for this initiative. The house located to the east of the community garden has a water hose that is free for our gardeners to use.
If you are interested in reserving a plot in the Union Hospital Community Garden please fill out the Community Garden Registration form. Plots will be awarded on a first-come first-serve basis. If demand for space is high and you are not awarded a plot you will be put on a waiting list in the order of which we receive your registration form.
The Union Community Garden Initiative has additional guidelines and garden etiquette information for our gardeners. We ask that all gardeners maintain your plot and the paths around your plot by picking and disposing of weeds.
